Parish of All Saints, Pytchley

Churchwardens:  Diana Smith 01536 790602  Mark Goodman 01536 799645

All Saints Church is not just an ancient monument, but the focus of a lively community

As well holding regular services of worship, we often use the Church for Plays or Concerts – and various Exhibitions.

Please use the links to the << left to find more details, and the calendar on the right >> of the page to find up to date information about services and events at Pytchley.

What to look out for in All Saints Church.....

· On the capital of one pillar is carved “The Green Man” with foliage coming from his mouth. He reminds us that Pytchley was once deep in the Rockingham Forest.

· The building has often been altered and added to. About 100 years after it was built, the pointed “Gothic” arches were added, and the roof was raised. Look towards the tower, and see the line of the old roof. Look along the top of the arches and see the ends of the old roof beams.

· The extra weight of the higher walls made the pillars lean outwards. Don’t worry – they’ve been like that for several hundred years and are quite safe!

· Originally, the walls were not bare stone, but plastered and brightly coloured. Look around and you’ll see surviving traces of colour.

· The Chancel was rebuilt in the 1830’s. Outside, you can see the old stonework, together with the new.

· When they raised the Chancel Arch they took down the old Rood Screen. On this was a Crucifix, with the Virgin Mary and St. John. High up to the left of the Chancel Arch you can see the Rood Loft, from which the Gospel was read on Good Friday.

· They also took down the Coat of Arms of Prince Charles who became Charles II. This had been erected in 1661 by the parishioners to show their loyalty to the Crown after the death of Oliver Cromwell. The Coat of Arms is now high up on the tower wall.

· There are two Stained Glass windows. The large one is in memory of a young merchant seaman who was killed in the battle for Hong Kong in 1941.

· The other commemorates a member of the Church, a keen gardener and flower arranger.

· In the tower are five bells which are regularly rung for divine worship and weddings

· 800 years (and perhaps more) have seen a lot of changes to this Church. What has not changed is its use as a meeting place for the people of the Church of Pytchley. For 800 years (and perhaps more) Christians have offered prayer and worship here, and have taught and proclaimed the Gospel. They still do!

· Every Sunday we meet around the altar in the Nave – an arrangement that would have seemed very strange to our ancestors.

· We sit on chairs rather than in the box pews that, till not long ago, completely filled the Church. One or two of them survive.

Pytchley All Saints’

Church

Your local church welcomes everybody, those with faith and those with none, to any and all of the events and services it runs.

The church is not just a building that is used for those important life events like, baptism, marriage and funerals.  It is a place of worship and peace. In our busy noisy world it provides a place of tranquillity, reflection and prayer.

Pytchley church key is available to all who want to enter.

We aim to be a caring community that everybody can be involved in.

If you cannot get to church a member of the clergy will be very happy to visit you at home or in hospital.

Mission Statement: - To develop the Church's position as the spiritual community center of Pytchley.
